Arta
Arta is the name of a parish in the North Eastern part of the island. The land scape of which it is part of is the Llevant Natural Park, an unspoilt area of coast and mountains which rise up to 562 metres at their peak. Along the north coast, there are several unspoilt calas and coves which a reminiscent of a period long ago when Mallorca was undeveloped. Access to these is only by foot, and can involve walks of up to a couple of hours which ensures that nature lovers form a large percentage of the population. There are also rooms in nature reserve houses which can be rented from the town on a nightly basis and are very cheap due to the hostel type feel of the residences. Standing over the town is the Franciscan convent of SantAntoni de Pàdua. This 17th century baroque building is visable from many miles away and has a fantastic interior. The town has a lovely pedestrian area with cafes and small family run hotels. In the centre of the town is an eclosed walled area caled sant salvador which was built in the 12th century. This distance of this part of the island from the airport at Palma ensures that the culture is very much still part of every day life. There is much horse culture and riding in the area.
