Alcudia

The strategic location of the city of Alcudia between the bays of Alcudia and Pollens made it an enclave coveted by invaders of all types. Its original nucleus was the Roman city of Pollentia, which was founded in 123 BC by Cecilio Metelo and the ruins of which can still be seen today. The historic centre of modern day Alcudia, with parts dating back to the Catalan conquest in the 13th century, is the ideal setting for a slow motion, traffic free, walk back through history - many of the streets have fortunately been pedestrianised. The old Moll and Sant Sehastia gates of the city walls are still standing, though unable to contain the growth of the population. There are striking buildings such as the church of Sant Jaume, the city's patron saint, and the exceptional 14th century mansion of Can Torro in calle d'en Serra, which today houses one of the best and most modern libraries on the island. During the walk, one passes a series of remarkable mansions that draw one's attention and which give a clear idea of the power and wealth of some families. The beaches of Alcudia Bay act like a magnet in both summer and winter. They are peaceful beaches, ideal for families, of the sort that the imagination conjures up when seeking paradise.
